title: "Time to Milestones"
description: "Compare how long matching cases take to reach important litigation milestones."
---

Time to Milestones shows how long matching cases take to reach important litigation events. Use it to compare the timing of decisions, remedies, trials, transfers, stays, appeals, and other milestones across the cases that match your research criteria.

## What it tells you

Time to Milestones summarizes the elapsed time from case filing to recorded litigation milestones.

Depending on the library and available data, milestones can include categories such as:

- claim construction
- decisions for the patentee or challenger
- remedies
- jury and bench trials
- transfers and stays
- appeals

The chart shows both typical timing and the spread of results across qualifying cases, making it easier to compare how quickly different milestones tend to occur.

## Questions it can answer

- How long do cases typically take to reach claim construction?
- How quickly do selected courts or judges reach major decisions?
- How does the timing of patentee and challenger decisions compare?
- When do remedies, trials, transfers, or stays usually occur?
- Does the timing change for a particular party, firm, court, judge, or filing period?

## How to interpret the analysis

Time to Milestones measures **elapsed time from case filing to each recorded milestone for the cases that match your selected criteria**.

Each row represents a type of milestone. The visual distribution shows both the central range of timing and unusually early or late results.

Use the chart to compare timing patterns across milestone types. A milestone that appears farther to the right generally occurs later in the life of a case.

The analysis includes only cases with a recorded event that qualifies for the selected milestone, so the number of cases contributing to one milestone may differ from another.

## Filters and defaults

Start by selecting the case population you want to analyze.

Common filters can include:

- case filing date
- courts
- judges
- parties
- firms

Use **Add Another Filter** to include other available criteria. After the results open, use **Edit Filters** or related filters to refine the analysis further.

Available filters and milestone categories vary by library.

## Reading the results

Milestones are grouped into related categories so you can compare similar stages of litigation.

The chart shows the distribution of timing for each milestone rather than a single value. Use the position and width of the displayed range to understand both typical timing and how much cases vary.

Individual points outside the main range represent less typical results and can help identify unusually fast or slow matters.

## Explore the underlying records

Where available, select a milestone to continue into the related Docket Navigator records.

Review the underlying cases and documents when you need to understand why a particular milestone occurred earlier or later than the broader pattern.

## Important considerations

Time to Milestones describes historical timing patterns for cases that reached the relevant milestone. It does not predict when a pending case will reach the same event.

The population can differ from one milestone to another because not every case reaches every stage.
