Shared filters

ANDA

Include, exclude, or isolate ANDA cases.

Current Year Options

When graphing recent data, use this feature to toggle between actual data for the year to date and estimated totals for the year.

Judges/Courts Selection

Toggle between searchable lists of Judges and Courts, and select specific judges or courts to compare their results.

Unit Options

Use the Totals and Percentages buttons to select whether to view results as parts to a whole or as total volume.

Legal Issue

Limit data to results involving substantive reasoning and analysis of a selected procedural or substantive legal concept (ex. Contributory Infringement, Fair Use, Capacity to Sue or be Sued).

Firms

Limit results to those associated with a selected firm. Use the drop-down arrow to browse other available firm filters.

Attorney

Generate results involving a specific attorney. Use the drop-down arrow to view more attorney search options and filter results.

Parties

Narrow to results involving a particular party. Use the checkbox to the right of a party to include the party’s affiliates. Use the drop-down arrow to browse other party filter options.

Case Filing Date

By default, results include all data from January 1, 2008 to present. Input a new date range or select one of the Autofill options to limit the dates.

Courts

Narrow to results associated with the selected court. Use the drop-down arrow to limit to results associated with selected courts or lower courts.

Document Types

View only decisions of the selected document types. Use Posture of Motion, Type of Document, Result of Motion, and Legal Issue filters to specify the document type to filter by.

Document Filing Date

Limit results to those associated with documents filed within a selected date range. Input a new date range or select one of the Autofill options to limit the dates.

Judges

Limit to results associated with a particular judge. Use the drop-down arrow to modify the judge filter and expand or narrow results.

Posture of Motion

Filter by a procedural status or process in effect when the motion was presented (ex. Motion by a Party, Sua Sponte, Motion to Vacate).

Case Age

Filter results by their association with cases of a specified age. Use the drop-down arrow to narrow the filter to case age from first filing.

Type of Document

Filter by results involving a selected type of document (ex. Motion to Intervene, Motion to Lift Stay, PTAB Motion to Seal).

Case Numbers

Generate a list of results affiliated with the selected cases. Use the drop-down arrow to switch between case numbers and appeal case numbers.

Case Termination Date

Limit to results associated with cases terminated within a selected date range. Input a new date range or select one of the Autofill options to limit the dates.

Case Status

Limit to results associated with active or terminated cases.

Case Age at Document Filing

Filter by cases with annotated documents filed within the selected case age range.

Result of Motion

Filter by the result of a motion (ex. Granted, Denied, Ruling Deferred).

Patent Library

Patent Technologies

Select from the drop-down menu or begin typing to filter by specific patent technologies (ex. 1620 Organic Chemistry for all 1621-1629 or select just a daughter node like 1628).

Patent Types

Select a patent type from the drop-down menu to filter to results associated with that type of patent (ex. Utility, Design, Plant).

Case Outcome

Limit data to cases with a specified outcome (ex. Settled, Pending, Patentee Won). Use the drop-down arrow and select to filter results by which party or firm had the specified outcome.

Determinations

Search for results with a selected determination (ex. Infringed, Invalid, Damages Recoverable).

Remedies

Limit results to cases in which a selected remedy was awarded (ex. TRO, Expenses, Damages).

Case Type

Filter results by a selected type of case (ex. Cases with Non-ANDA Pleadings, PTAB Inter Partes Review Cases)

Patents

Search and select a patent to limit to results involving that patent.

Outcome

Limit data to cases with a specified outcome (ex. Patentee won, ITC settlement).

Appeal Status

Generate a list of documents with your selected appeal status (ex. Appeal Currently Pending, Has Appeal Outcome).

Appeal Result

Filter by documents with your selected appeal results (ex. Mandamus Denied, Vacated, all Appellant Win results). Use the drop-down arrow to choose whether to filter by all-time appeal results or only a decision’s latest appeal result.

Copyright Library

Cases Involving Copyrighted Works

Limit to cases involving a specific Copyrighted work by inputting the Registration Number or Title/Description of the work. Use the drop-down arrow to narrow the results to cases involving only registered or unregistered copyrighted works.

Cases Involving Claims

Filter cases by the type of claim they involve, like a DMCA Violation, Infringement, Infringement via BitTorrent, or a VARA Violation.

Trademark Library

Cases Involving Trademarks

Limit to cases involving a specific trademark by inputting the Registration Number, Serial Number, or Title/Description of the Trademark. Use the drop-down arrow to narrow the results to cases involving only registered or unregistered Trademarks.

Cases Involving Claims

Filter cases by the type of claim they involve, like False Advertising, Infringement, or Dilution.

Tool-specific filters

Court Activity Over Time

Forum

Filter charts by PTAB, ITC, and U.S. District Court activity. Select more than one to compare the forums, or select a specific district court to toggle off the PTAB and ITC activity.

District Court

Type and select a district court to view that court’s litigation activity, or select multiple district courts to view those courts’ aggregated litigation activity.

Case Filing Date Slider

Drag and drop the end points of the timeline to limit the data to cases filed within selected years.

Motion Outcomes

Posture of Motion

Opt to include, exclude, or isolate proceedings involving Highly Assertive Entities (HAEs).

Interactive Legend

Click on the labels in a chart’s legend to include and exclude data from the chart.

PTAB Expert Rankings

Retaining Party

Find experts retained by a specific party. This filter will show you all experts a party has retained when the party was a patentee and when it was a patent challenger.

Find a Specific Expert

Jump to a specific expert’s rank on the patentee or patent challenger expert lists. See how an expert compares to others in certain patent areas and overall.

Retaining Party Role

Show experts who submitted declarations on behalf of patentees or on behalf of patent challengers.

Filing Date of Petitions

By default, Expert Rankings are based on all data from September 16, 2012 to present. Select dates in the drop-down menu to filter the ranking data by a specific timeframe.

Technology Center

Rank experts in a specific technology center. Select from the drop-down menu or begin typing to search for a specific technology (ex. 1620 Organic Chemistry, 2420 Cable and Television).

Ranking Options

Use the Number of Cases and Win Rate buttons to rank experts by the number of cases in which the expert was retained or by the percentage of cases the expert’s retaining party won.

Time to Trial

Case Filing Date

By default, results include all data from January 1, 2008 to present. Input a new date range to limit the dates.

Dates to Exclude

Exclude a date range to account for events that may temporarily alter trial schedules, such as a natural disaster or a pandemic.

Trial Type

Include results of factual and legal conclusions issued by a judge, jury verdicts, or both.

Case Size

Include cases with certain numbers of accusations. Small cases have four or fewer, Medium cases have five to nine, and Large cases have ten or more accusations.

Exclusion Options

Choose whether to include outliers and cases with transfers, stays, or consolidation in the results.

Timelines

Timeline View

Once on the timeline page, choose whether to view the timelines from the day of complaint filing or arranged by calendar date.

Motion Success by Year

In Cases With Document Types

View only decisions in cases with the selected document types. Use Posture of Motion, Type of Document, Result of Motion, and Legal Issue filters to specify the document type to filter by.

Current Case Age

View only decisions in cases with the selected current case age.

Document Text

Filter results by those associated with documents that have specific text. Include a citation by selecting the “add citation” option in the upper right corner of the “text” filter. Input the article, rule, or section number you want to filter by. Toggle between natural and Boolean search types using the buttons underneath the text box, and use the guide link to view a list of Boolean operators.
