General Statistics provides a broad overview of patent litigation activity through a collection of prebuilt charts and tables. Use it for a quick look at historical trends and activity across several common areas of patent litigation.
What it tells you
Section titled “What it tells you”General Statistics brings together a range of summary views covering areas such as:
- new patent cases
- case parties
- active courts and judges
- patent determinations
- non-stipulated determinations
- awards and injunctions
- construed terms
- selected motion outcomes
The available views are designed to provide a high-level picture of patent litigation activity over time.
Questions it can answer
Section titled “Questions it can answer”- How has patent case filing activity changed over time?
- Which courts and judges have been most active?
- How frequently do different types of patent determinations appear?
- What trends appear in selected motion outcomes?
- How has activity involving remedies, injunctions, or construed terms changed over time?
How to interpret the analysis
Section titled “How to interpret the analysis”General Statistics summarizes historical patent litigation activity using prebuilt views of Docket Navigator data.
Most views present counts or other summary measures over time. Some include a current-year view or estimate so you can compare recent activity with prior years.
Because the collection covers several different types of litigation activity, the meaning of each chart depends on the records being summarized. Use the chart title, labels, and accompanying table to understand what is being counted.
Filters and defaults
Section titled “Filters and defaults”Some General Statistics views allow you to refine the underlying records using Docket Navigator filters.
Available filters depend on the selected view and may include criteria such as:
- filing date
- court
- judge
- patent
- determination
- remedy
- case outcome
Use Edit Filters when you want to narrow the analysis beyond the default view.
Reading the results
Section titled “Reading the results”Results are generally presented as a chart with the underlying values shown in a table.
For year-based views, the current year may be shown separately from prior completed years. Where an estimated current-year value is available, treat it as an indication of the year’s likely pace rather than a final count.
Use General Statistics for broad orientation and historical context. For focused research on a particular question, the dedicated Analytics Toolkit tools provide more targeted filtering and analysis.
Explore the underlying records
Section titled “Explore the underlying records”Where links are available, use the chart or table to continue into the related Docket Navigator records and review the activity behind the summary.
Important considerations
Section titled “Important considerations”General Statistics is a collection of prebuilt summary views, so the available filters and behavior can vary from one view to another.
The statistics are best used to identify broad patterns and areas for further research rather than as a single standardized analysis.
