A PTAB Expert Profile is a pre-built Docket Navigator research workspace centered on one expert witness who has submitted testimony in Patent Trial and Appeal Board proceedings.

Use a PTAB Expert Profile to understand an expert’s PTAB experience, identify the parties that retained the expert, review the declarations associated with that expert, examine the patents and technologies represented in the expert’s matters, find other experts with similar technology experience, and inspect the underlying PTAB proceedings and documents.

Docket Navigator builds the profile from the expert data available in the Patent Library. The current profile can combine an expert overview with record-level searches for cases, clients, declarations, patents, and similar experts.

Understand the expert’s PTAB experience

The PTAB Expert Profile provides a starting point for understanding the proceedings Docket Navigator has associated with the selected expert.

Depending on the available data, the profile can bring together information such as:

PTAB cases involving the expert;
parties that retained the expert;
the expert’s declarations;
patents involved in those proceedings;
technology classifications associated with the expert’s matters;
the expert’s experience for Petitioners and Patent Owners;
other experts with similar technology experience.

The overview and record-level searches describe the expert’s recorded PTAB history. Use the underlying cases and declarations when the substance of the expert’s testimony, the scope of the engagement, or the procedural context matters.

Review the expert’s PTAB cases

The Cases research in a PTAB Expert Profile identifies PTAB proceedings associated with the selected expert.

Case history can help answer questions such as:

How many PTAB matters has the expert appeared in?
Which proceedings involved similar patents or technologies?
Did the expert appear for a Petitioner or Patent Owner?
Which cases are most relevant to the current matter?
What happened in those proceedings?

A case’s outcome belongs to the underlying proceeding and retaining party. The expert’s presence in the case does not establish that the expert caused the result.

Review the individual case, decisions, and declarations before drawing conclusions about the expert’s effectiveness.

Research retaining parties and clients

The Clients research identifies parties associated with the selected expert’s PTAB work.

This can help answer questions such as:

Which companies or organizations have retained this expert?
Has the expert worked for the client or opponent before?
Has the expert appeared on behalf of both Patent Owners and Petitioners?
Which clients account for the largest share of the expert’s recorded PTAB experience?
Which underlying proceedings make up that experience?

Retaining-party role is important when interpreting an expert’s history. Experience supporting a Patent Owner and experience supporting a Petitioner represent different sides of a PTAB dispute and should be evaluated separately when the distinction matters.

Client counts measure recorded appearances in the proceedings selected by the active criteria. They do not indicate the scope of the expert’s assignment or the importance of the expert’s testimony in a particular matter.

Read the expert’s declarations

The Declarations research provides the expert declaration records Docket Navigator has associated with the selected expert.

Declarations are often the most useful source when the research question concerns the substance of an expert’s prior work.

Use them to investigate questions such as:

What opinions has the expert offered in prior PTAB proceedings?
Which technical subjects has the expert addressed?
Has the expert previously discussed a patent, reference, claim limitation, or technology relevant to the current matter?
How does the expert describe their qualifications or technical experience?
Has the expert taken positions in another proceeding that should be reviewed more closely?

Open the underlying declaration when the exact language, methodology, qualifications, cited evidence, or technical opinion matters.

The profile identifies and organizes declaration records. It does not summarize or characterize the expert’s testimony as consistent, inconsistent, strong, or weak.

Research the patents in the expert’s matters

The Patents research identifies patents from PTAB proceedings associated with the selected expert.

Patent history can help answer questions such as:

Which patents has the expert addressed in PTAB testimony?
Has the expert worked on multiple patents in the same technology area?
Has the expert appeared in proceedings involving a patent similar to the one in the current matter?
Which PTAB cases connect the expert to a particular patent?

Use the patent and case records to understand the relationship between the expert, the retaining party, and the challenged patent.

A patent appearing in the expert’s profile means the expert is associated with a PTAB case involving that patent. It does not by itself establish which claims, prior-art references, or technical issues the expert addressed.

Find experts with similar technology experience

Where technology classification data is available, the PTAB Expert Profile can identify Similar Experts.

Docket Navigator builds this research from the Technology Centers associated with patents in the selected expert’s PTAB experience. The resulting experts have experience connected to the same Technology Centers.

This can help when you need to:

identify other experts with experience in similar technologies;
build an initial list of potential experts for further review;
compare the PTAB experience of several experts in a technical area;
find alternatives to an expert already known to the research team.

Technology Center overlap is a research signal, not a conclusion that two experts have equivalent qualifications or expertise.

Review each expert’s cases, patents, and declarations before deciding whether the expert’s technical background is relevant to the matter.

If the selected expert has no associated classification data, Similar Experts may not be available.

Interpret retaining-party outcomes carefully

An expert’s profile can provide historical context about what happened in matters where the expert appeared. Separate PTAB Expert analytics can also evaluate experts by the number of cases in which they were retained or by the percentage of cases won by their retaining parties.

Those figures describe retaining-party outcomes, not an outcome attributed to the expert personally.

When reviewing any win-rate or outcome information, consider:

whether the expert appeared for the Petitioner or Patent Owner;
which cases are included;
the relevant Technology Center or patent population;
the filing-date range;
the number of cases in the sample;
how the underlying case outcome is defined.

A retaining party’s win rate does not measure the quality of the expert’s testimony and does not predict the result of a future proceeding.

Use the underlying proceedings and declarations to determine whether the matters are comparable to the research question.

How PTAB expert data is collected

Docket Navigator defines a PTAB Expert Witness as an expert whose testimony is relied upon by a Petitioner or Patent Owner in an Inter Partes Review, Covered Business Method Review, or Post-Grant Review before the PTAB.

Docket Navigator collects this information using a semi-automated process supplemented by human review.

The process includes:

identifying potential expert declarations from PTAB exhibit lists and other filings;
using rules-based and machine-learning techniques to distinguish expert declarations from attorney, fact-witness, and other declarations;
sending selected records for manual review when automated signals conflict or confidence is low;
automatically identifying expert names and then having Docket Navigator staff review those names to consolidate variations that refer to the same person.

Docket Navigator’s documented internal testing found that about 97% of expert witnesses were accurately associated with PTAB proceedings using this process. Expert-to-party associations also use the filing information that identifies which side submitted the document.

This methodology is important when interpreting the profile. The profile reflects the expert declarations and associations Docket Navigator has identified within its PTAB data rather than a complete professional biography or a list of every expert engagement outside the PTAB.

How the PTAB Expert Profile is scoped

Docket Navigator constructs PTAB Expert Profile searches using the selected expert as the profile criterion.

That expert criterion is applied through the relationship appropriate to each record type:

Cases associates the expert with PTAB proceedings;
Clients associates the expert with parties in those proceedings;
Declarations associates the expert with expert documents;
Patents associates the expert with patents from those proceedings;
Similar Experts uses the Technology Centers associated with the selected expert’s patent experience when that classification data is available.

Additional editable criteria can further narrow a result by characteristics such as filing date, case, party, patent, Technology Center, or other available Patent Library criteria.

The active criteria define the result. When profile-derived research is copied into another binder and its editable criteria are changed, the resulting search can be broader or narrower than the original PTAB Expert Profile.

Inspect the underlying proceedings and declarations

PTAB Expert Profile research supports movement from a summary of experience to the records behind it.

A common research path is:

PTAB Expert Profile → case, client, declaration, patent, or similar-expert research → filtered Docket Navigator records → underlying PTAB proceeding or declaration

Use the underlying proceeding to understand the expert’s retaining party, the patent at issue, and the procedural result. Use the declaration itself when the research concerns the expert’s technical opinions, qualifications, methodology, prior art, or claim analysis.

This verification step is especially important for expert research because case counts and retaining-party outcomes provide context, while the declarations show what the expert actually said.

Save or monitor PTAB Expert Profile research

A live PTAB Expert Profile is built for the selected expert when the profile is opened.

Use Save As when you want to preserve or extend the research. The saved copy becomes a normal user binder containing the profile-derived research included in the copy. You can add searches, organize tabs, change editable criteria, and save later changes independently.

Alerts operate on alertable record-level searches. When an alert is created from PTAB Expert Profile research, the expert criteria remain part of the monitored search. This can be useful for following new PTAB cases, declarations, patents, or client relationships associated with the expert.

Analytics charts themselves are not the alert target.
