Use a Trademark Profile to see where the trademark has appeared in litigation, review the cases and proceedings associated with it, find pleadings and orders, examine Docket Navigator’s recorded Accusations, and see how litigation involving the trademark has changed over time.
Docket Navigator builds the profile from the data associated with the selected registration. The current profile brings together record-level searches and litigation analytics in a binder.
What you can do with a Trademark Profile
Section titled “What you can do with a Trademark Profile”Trademark Profiles support enforcement research, clearance and dispute research, portfolio review, matter preparation, due diligence, and litigation monitoring. They can help answer questions such as:
- In which U.S. district court cases or TTAB proceedings has this trademark appeared?
- Who has asserted or challenged the trademark in those matters?
- What complaints, petitions, answers, motions, orders, or other recorded documents are associated with the trademark?
- Which underlying documents should I review to understand a particular dispute involving the mark?
- What Accusations has Docket Navigator associated with the trademark?
- Has litigation involving the trademark increased, decreased, or clustered during a particular period?
- Are there several proceedings involving the same registration that should be reviewed together?
- What has happened recently in matters involving the trademark?

Open a Trademark Profile
Section titled “Open a Trademark Profile”Open Profile Search, choose Trademark, and search for the trademark by number or name.
The current Trademark Profile is scoped to the selected trademark registration. Docket Navigator uses the registration number to identify the litigation records included in the profile.
Review the trademark’s litigation history
Section titled “Review the trademark’s litigation history”The Trademark Profile brings together cases Docket Navigator has associated with the selected registration.
Docket Navigator’s Trademark Library covers U.S. district court matters involving Lanham Act claims and proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, including Cancellation, Opposition, Ex Parte Appeal, and Concurrent Use proceedings.
Use the case history to answer questions such as:
- Where has the trademark been litigated?
- Has the registration appeared in both district court and TTAB proceedings?
- Which parties were involved?
- When were the proceedings filed?
- Which matters should I review first for the research question at hand?
The cases shown in the profile are limited to records Docket Navigator has associated with the selected registration and to the scope of the Trademark Library.
Review docket activity
Section titled “Review docket activity”Trademark Profiles can provide docket entries associated with the selected registration’s cases.
Docket research is useful when you need to reconstruct the procedural history of a dispute or identify what happened before and after a significant filing or decision.
Use the docket to answer questions such as:
- When was the complaint, petition, or other initiating document filed?
- What happened next in the proceeding?
- When did an order or decision appear on the docket?
- What subsequent activity followed a significant filing?
The docket view is a record-level search scoped to cases associated with the selected registration.
Find pleadings and orders
Section titled “Find pleadings and orders”The Trademark Profile can bring together pleadings and orders from cases involving the selected registration.
This is useful when the research task requires the actual filings and decisions rather than a case list alone.
Depending on the underlying matter, the records can include complaints, petitions, answers, motions, orders, and other processed litigation documents.
Use these records to investigate questions such as:
- How was the trademark claim framed?
- Which filing raised the issue I am researching?
- What did the court or Board decide?
- Which document should I read to verify the procedural or substantive history?
Open the underlying document when the wording, legal analysis, or procedural context matters.
Review Accusations involving the trademark
Section titled “Review Accusations involving the trademark”Trademark Profiles can provide Docket Navigator Accusation records associated with the selected registration.
These records help connect the trademark to the disputes in which it appears and can be used to identify the matters and parties associated with a particular assertion or challenge.
Because the meaning of an Accusation depends on the underlying case, claim, and party relationships, use the associated case and source documents to understand the precise nature of the dispute.
The Trademark Profile does not reduce the registration’s litigation history to a single overall result. Review the individual matters when the disposition or legal effect of a dispute is important.
See how litigation involving the trademark has changed over time
Section titled “See how litigation involving the trademark has changed over time”Trademark Profiles can include Cases by Year for cases associated with the selected registration.
Cases by Year can help answer questions such as:
- When did recorded litigation involving the trademark begin?
- Were filings concentrated in a particular period?
- Has the volume of recorded cases changed over time?
- Which individual cases make up a spike in activity?
The chart describes case filings associated with the selected registration. It does not explain why filing activity increased or decreased.
Use the underlying case results when the reason for a trend matters.
Understand the profile’s scope
Section titled “Understand the profile’s scope”Docket Navigator constructs Trademark Profile searches using the selected registration number as the profile criterion.
That criterion is applied to the profile’s case, docket, pleadings and orders, Accusation, and Cases by Year research. Additional criteria can further narrow an editable search.
This means the Trademark Profile is different from a general Cases Involving Trademarks search. A general Trademark Library search can be built using a registration number, serial number, or trademark title or description and can include registered or unregistered trademarks. The Trademark Profile itself is built around the selected registration.
The active criteria define the result. If profile-derived research is copied into another binder and its editable criteria are changed, the resulting search can be broader or narrower than the original Trademark Profile.
Trademark Library coverage
Section titled “Trademark Library coverage”The Trademark Library includes two principal litigation sources:
U.S. district courts. Docket Navigator covers federal civil actions addressing Lanham Act claims within the scope defined for the Trademark Library.
Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Docket Navigator covers electronically available Cancellation, Opposition, Ex Parte Appeal, and Concurrent Use proceedings from TTABVUE within the documented scope.
Coverage dates and the depth of available data differ by record type and forum. Consult Scope of Data when the completeness or start date of the underlying dataset matters to the research.
Inspect the underlying cases and documents
Section titled “Inspect the underlying cases and documents”Trademark Profile research supports movement from the registration’s litigation history to the records behind it.
A common research path is:
Trademark Profile → case, docket, pleading, Accusation, or Cases by Year view → filtered Docket Navigator records → underlying case or source document
Analytics that support drill-down can open the cases represented by a selected value. Record-level results can then be used to inspect the individual proceedings, filings, orders, and other records associated with the registration.
Use the underlying records when making a legal conclusion about ownership, infringement, dilution, registrability, likelihood of confusion, or another issue whose meaning depends on the facts and decision in a particular proceeding.
Save or monitor Trademark Profile research
Section titled “Save or monitor Trademark Profile research”A live Trademark Profile is built for the selected registration when the profile is opened.
Use Save As when you want to preserve or extend the research. The saved copy becomes a normal user binder containing the profile-derived research included in the copy. You can add searches, organize tabs, change editable criteria, and save later changes independently.
Alerts operate on alertable record-level searches. When an alert is created from Trademark Profile research, the trademark criteria remain part of the monitored search. This can be useful for following new cases, docket entries, pleadings, orders, or other records associated with the registration.
Analytics charts themselves are not the alert target.
