Docket Navigator constructs Copyright Profile searches using the selected copyright registration as the profile criterion.

That criterion scopes the profile’s case, docket, pleadings and orders, Accusation, and Cases by Year research. Additional criteria can further narrow an editable search.

This distinction matters because the broader Copyright Library can also search for Cases Involving Copyrighted Works using a Registration Number or the Title/Description of a work and can distinguish registered from unregistered copyrighted works. The Copyright Profile itself is centered on the selected registration.

The active criteria define the result. If profile-derived research is copied into another binder and its editable criteria are changed, the resulting search can be broader or narrower than the original Copyright Profile.

Copyright Library coverage

The Copyright Library covers federal civil actions in U.S. District Courts that fall within Docket Navigator’s definition of a Copyright Case. This includes matters identified through Copyright Nature of Suit data and other cases involving federal copyright, infringement, ownership, or Digital Millennium Copyright Act claims within the documented scope.

The available depth of data depends on the record type and date. The current Scope of Data documentation states that:

basic case information is available back to 2008;
copyright registration numbers from electronically available complaints are included from 2018;
indexed rulings and complaints are included from 2018.

Docket Navigator also excludes Strike 3 mass BitTorrent cases from Copyright coverage beginning in August 2025, and similar mass-filed cases may be excluded.

Consult Scope of Data when the completeness, start date, or inclusion rules for the underlying Copyright dataset matter to the research.

Inspect the underlying cases and documents

A common research path is:

Record-level results can be used to inspect the individual cases, filings, orders, parties, and Accusations associated with the registration. Analytics that support drill-down can open the cases represented by a selected value.

Use the underlying records when making a legal conclusion about infringement, ownership, DMCA liability, fair use, damages, or another issue whose meaning depends on the facts and decision in a particular case.

Save or monitor Copyright Profile research

A live Copyright Profile is built for the selected registration when the profile is opened.

Use Save As when you want to preserve or extend the research. The saved copy becomes a normal user binder containing the profile-derived research included in the copy. You can add searches, organize tabs, change editable criteria, and save later changes independently.

Alerts operate on alertable record-level searches. When an alert is created from Copyright Profile research, the copyright criteria remain part of the monitored search. This can be useful for following new cases, docket entries, pleadings, orders, Accusations, or other records associated with the registration.
